ある日、健太は冷え切った夜の海辺に一人、座り込んでいた。幾時間もの歳月を水面と対峙したが、網は空っぽだ。腹の底から力が抜け、骨の髄まで疲労が染み渡る。悔しさ、失望、そして「なぜこんな場所にまで来てしまったのか」という自己嫌悪が、全身を苛んでいた。
「もう、無理だ」
そう呟き、すべてを諦めかけたその時、背後から声がした。親友の悠真が、静かに立っている。健太は、もう何も期待できないと、ただ「何も釣れなかった」と打ち明けた。
悠真は、健太の絶望を否定するように、ただ一言言った。「反対側から、もう一度試してみろ」
健太は、馬鹿げていると顔を歪ませた。何時間も同じ場所を彷徨い、この網が空であることを知りすぎている。しかし、他に頼る場所も、気力も残っていなかった。
半信半疑で、健太は再び竿を水に沈めた。そして、信じられない光景が目の前に広がった。網を引き上げると、そこには山ほどの魚が、きらめきを放ちながら詰まっていたのだ。
健太は茫然と立ち尽くす。この奇跡は、どこから来たのだろう。ふと、彼は悠真を見た。その優しすぎる眼差しが、まるで全てを統べるかのような重みを持っていた。
命を繋ぐ真の力は、常に私たち自身の目に見える場所の外側にあるのかもしれない。ただ、誰かの信じる温かさだけが、全てを変えるのだ。

You tell him you came in vain—
you caught no fish.
He tells you to try again on the right side.
You look at him like he’s gotta be crazy.
You’ve been there for hours, you know for a fact the net will be empty when it comes back up again.
You do it anyway…
